Set changes terrified my daughter, Abby, when she first began using an insulin pump when she was three and a half years old. For weeks we cried together, not knowing how to ease her angst.
One afternoon Abby and I saw an adorable blue stuffed dog in a local gift shop and because she had been having such a tough time with the insulin pump changeover, I decided to purchase it for her. Abby held tightly to her new stuffed animal for that afternoon’s set change, and the combination of it and the numbing effect of the Emla Cream which we used for the first time that day resulted in a less tearful set change.
Because Abby did not understand the effect of Emla Cream, her three year old mind convinced her that the new blue dog was magic because the set change didn't hurt that day. The little blue dog soon became known as "PumpPal” and to our amazement it has been by Abby’s side for almost every set change since. Even now, at eight years old, PumpPal goes everywhere with Abby.
Stuffed animals can be lifelong companions for children, especially in times of fear, and Abby would like every child to have a PumpPal just like hers. Unfortunately, we are not able to provide Abby's original PumpPal for your child, but we do have PumpPal™ Pals Bobbidy, Mussy and Yardley; quality Gund stuffed animals which will provide years of companionship for your child.
